Our guest once more is David Paich. _Inside Musicast (分秒) so Dave I wanna turn our tension at Jeff Porcaro for a few moments and I also like to welcome another guest who assist sit in on a Jeff Porcaro conversation that Scott Page Scott well come back to Inside Musicast _Scott Page (分秒) hello everybody happy to be here that's for sure _Inside Musicast (分秒) you know Jeff is, is one of the best of not most respected drummers in the history popular music i mean it without doubt and I'm stil amaze that even now fourteen years after he left us it help powerful his affect is on the music business and how much respect he still growners you know i read (oh, yeah), i read blogs *** inside line from people all the time who, who didn't know Jeff personaly but they speak *** if you were a *** you know and, and in quiet sort way he really had amazing rouor and there was usually as tight playing and his groove did most talking _David Paich (分秒) got *** that right you know i'm just i have just *** bunch the *** i had extensive when Jeff likes laughs me free time but when you realized who he played with i mean he just cover at all i mean i'm start you with 10CC, Peter Allen, but you get into like Springsteen, Dire Straits, Allen Toussaint Jackson Brown, Dr.John all these people i mean everybody he play with you know Paul McCartney and Steely Dan which were probably those who the most tightly cast sessions those Seals and Crofts was the hardest sessions i ever had get on but because they were using nothing but in *** i'm mean pro *** get on that Jeff got *** he got me in the Steely Dan i got *** Seals and Crofts but i mean that stuff was that *** back they were tweezing in this stuff *** microscoopes like guys do Pro Tools today but we were players (Right) do you have to play it you like Pro Tools back then you know what I mean _Scott Page (分秒) yeah Jimmy Seals was difinitely cause i know i came on the Seals and Crofts Band after you guys _David Paich (分秒) *** Pro Tools _Scott Page (分秒) i love Jimmy in *** i tell you Jimmy is the perfection _David Paich (分秒) Jimmy is per ***, he is like a he is, he is human pro tools _Scott Page (分秒) he is That's no question _David Paich (分秒) and genius you know _Inside Musicast (分秒) so this Seals and Crofts gig that was a i mean that was you alayas very demanding ha? _David Paich (分秒) yeah, was and that was Jeff very demanding becaus like I said jimmy Seals everything had be perfcetly in tune and feel alright everything my keep played on some of that stuff Mike Porcaro, and Jeff and myself and Hungate played on stuff there i was the first one that do what i did "Diamond Girl" back in the '73 and then Jeff, i got Jeff on the records there, that was first tune I played on. _Inside Musicast (分秒) and hey David you know i'm sure that and Scott, too i'm sure that Jeff was like a brother to you both and so few would give us you thought about what Jeff met you as a musican or friend _David Paich (分秒) first of all Jeff was like the cools guy in the world first of all he is the best drummer i mean he played fourteen better than any drummer plays in any ages right now for *** concern _Scott Page (分秒) yeah _David Paich (分秒) that's how good drummer, Right Scotty? _Scott Page (分秒) oh no question _David Paich (分秒) i mean the guys with so awesome but *** that's for why we want to reheasals just take Jeff you know it was easy to play you know It's like play with Bernard Purdie but i even like Jeff better than Purdie you know _Inside Musicast (分秒) And Purdie was a big in front on Jeff, collect? _David Paich (分秒) Yeah, Purdie and Keltner and John Bohnam you know this is three big guys is there but Jeff was just cool he is first of all styles first times I met Jeff i mean i was like, my parents had *** so i was just like a guys bloke back muntain you know ok? cut that picture while walking Jeff got like long hair a hippy bandana of vest on any goes he has the american flags so in *** croth you know where you can wear that stuff my shccol we were like you know, we were like uniform *** stuff *** _Inside Musicast (分秒) you didn't walk in any shcool why can I quite you _David Paich (分秒) no no, no Jeff just absolutely always coolest, always he you told the he ... style wore the right stuff and always handle all of crowds i mean when we be the session and someone walk in the room like me Jeff just oh perfect Paich is here and he was **** made the sessions fun (Yeah) he was *** of tensions all times drawing pictures just entertaining people _Scott Page (分秒) all the time _David Paich (分秒) I was the fun *** he is taken easiest part to get after he get take me just Jeff hanging out doing over dubs in calling people on the phone get in people with come down play on thing we just cut any be drum pictures really body were *** it pretty, pretty soon the whole room before and we just make demos for these people you know they *** even *** you know of we *** be German you know _Scott Page (分秒) yeah, i mean he would do things with just amaze me, when we were that i remember doing when we did those those Rickey Giannco that album we did with Rickey one of things was one of those tracks came down we listening to the track and track wasn't really rockin' little hard and brother Jeff saids give me a tamburine _David Paich (分秒) right _Scott Page (分秒) and he just grab the tamburine and laid a tumburine track on hole thing *** out (Yeah) with just unbeleive or me had such a i mean his time and his groove deep _David Paich (分秒) Oh, yearh i mean he would go in had do hole B-52's album one day he going do the Reo Speedwagon they cut their hole album Jeffrey did the hole drum on the hole album one day (Oh my gosh) just boom-boom-boom-boom-boom-boom-boom one take after another that tell you liked play we start doing the hole records put *** cause he was always busy is like i got go to the session guys they only got time for one take we *** Jeff make a TOTO album hey man, i'm late you know _Scott Page (分秒) yeah _David Paich (分秒) and he was great man and every great thing about Jeff when we were on the road he never ever refuse to show kids how to play drums any did drum clinics on the road (Really) and stuff no one knows *** you know i heard Jeff there were drum solos because Keltner told Ringo hate solo so Jeff had hate solos too because Ringo hate solos ok? (It's amazing) *** whatever play solo one clinic *** said *** hear you solo body you know you don't like solo *** which idea of solo Jeff got to up there any **** sticks down play with his hands like *** hole solo and then picked up sticks ripped off with like *** unbelievable player he *** i can't play i usually *** two bass drums man every rehearsal sometime Jeff con*** he just hated show up because Keltner didn't like that shit you know _Scott Page (分秒) i know difinitely i rember him tell me story said you know *** i was ask about the drum solo he said look he said what ever you do don't play *** to you can't stand _David Paich (分秒) right _Scott Page (分秒) he said even play fills *** you can *** and then I *** wanna same as like truely really loved about Jeff is because with just it was all about the groove (yeah) and he man i'm tellin you he was, he really had so much in front on me cause when i was a kid *** i was studying be an architect and didn't really care about music and i got in that want me got in the band it change my life to become musician and at that time i was in colleage i was the oldest guy and i, i was tranmpet player at that time. and what happen was because of Jeff i basically bore at study so i cause *** you guys took offence *** *** Sonny and Cher all those things so happening in most soul band kind what way are *** Still Life that's right *** so first and what happen was I've, *** in the back of my mind it was like man i got practice cause i wanna do those gigs so for me Jeff was somebody's within the back of my head (Yeah) everyday, i'm every day i practice there wasn't day i don't think went bye there was like a ok man i got *** good enough so I can get move myself up *** get in these music business and i never forget that Dave i got call *** TOTO gig man i mean and that was one of the a big days for me personally because it was just like "ah man at lease I got to the poing where i got called to play with my bodys again and that *** _David Paich (分秒) no man, we were groove so hard cause you've been *** Scotty is, Scotty is so humble man he is like three with Pink Floyd And he goes *** just one *** big those guys we like *** Scotty can playing *** figures Scotty play *** trampet and now he plays guitar O.K.? People should be a gift Scotty and we get them play *** why we like this because we for comfortable becuse you from the oldhood all neighborhood and we knew Scotty was get on relyable everything like that and we have great hang with him you know _Scott Page (分秒) yeah, great time. I was ... _David Paich (分秒) you *** never you know, you don't, usually hanging out with a trampet player after gig you know what I mean? we were wait a boled Scotty you know *** better hair than *** Scotty man _Scott Page (分秒) Oh *** look at that hair i can now rap a round *** start loop ... _Inside Musicast (分秒) hey Scott when you join' when you asked to go out on the road with TOTO that was around time of [Isolaltion] is that collect? _Scott Page (分秒) I was the yeah, the [Isolation] tour And I remember man all I remember was that go to the rehearsl is like go home and I shit all night long Cause I was so *** go back to the gig ... _David Paich (分秒) We remember Jeff *** I remember Jeffrey re firtst i playin' Scotty like '70, '69? When Jeff stop make everybody rehearse shit to get it tight but *** bass drum you know everything had go with the bass drum (Yes) you know so he burst everybody you know i just get out of way i just *** that I said yeah Jeff go get them you know but cause I was playing everybody else playin' drum like guitar is *** i wanna upright piano so I'm was just I'm just *** hear me so I'm just smile *** yeah man I'm *** you know _Scott Page (分秒) hey Paich what was that show we did it at school what we did was, what was the musical that we did what *** _David Paich (分秒) i was my fairlay _Inside Musicast (分秒) you guys did my fairlady? _David Paich (分秒) yes we talk about my school right Scotty? _Scott Page (分秒) Yeah, we did that thing is that my fairlady _David Paich (分秒) *** pulled out program *** for that my school didn't have music *** so we *** there, we thrugh my fairladay but i changed all music to john williams orientation which was the jazz for the shall we man put out and I *** arrangement *** like i got down *** show when i was two song short *** My day *** it rode like 20 minute you kow _Scott Page (分秒) i remember that _David Paich (分秒) And Scotty, Scotty and Still Life horn section I'm start head record *** but it was we were rehearse that was like bad day it was like who came *** show you know what i mean awesome i figure out talk about Scotty did you go to UCLA with paul *** with me and with ... and kelly shanahan we did calss over there? _Scott Page (分秒) no, no i remember i don't think so _David Paich (分秒) yeah, there was a couple difference things any way brought back some memory right there. _Scott Page (分秒) yeah _David Paich (分秒) you know _Inside Musicast (分秒) you know i've read some personal *** Jeff The Steely Dan gigs that he was involoved in a lot of time just a huge *** proffetionaly speaking in saking back are you know of always been known for *** with just incredible talent (Yeah) and Jeff certainly fetch foot category what was about Jeff playin' that made him such a so after drummer any and in your mind _David Paich (分秒) well, first of all he is, he has *** time cause used practice with metronome rush in and drugin in *** play it around click make it feel natural cause you *** his dad *** profesional his dad always on ask you know playing with click Jeff you know keep time and all stuff you know so and he stay hardest do, I think Seals and Crofts records Jeff was biggist Steely Dan fun from begining Jeff was *** Hendrix *** Steely Dan *** so he would go check them out and then I think he met he is Danny or somebody like *** got a call Jim Gordon through or call some like that and he with in that he did a couple track of them and then he call me and i did the that was [Pretzel Logic] i did "Night By Night" but Jeff loved because Jeff *** anything Jeff *** freak *** even this like *** but if this is the good track he tell you why it's a good track and show you *** everything like this and that's the same time if Jeff didn't figure with the right player i mean some one "Black Friday" he put down sticks *** i'm gonna fix this track and he call Jim Keltner on the phone to come down and play Jeff *** everybody, they have to stop cause Jeff *** "I know, I know the right drummer for play on this." and he always call another drummer it hired *** call somebody you know right? so i think with *** sensitivety and for this Jeff thought like a song writer when he played drummer, he didn't like a drummer _Inside Musicast (分秒) it sounds, it sounds like that yeah. _David Paich (分秒) but if I fault for Simmon Philips It's hard fault him but Simmon plays more like a drummer Jeff plays more like the guys wrote a song what he play so he just have to play busy he just plays like if you *** he written hole song that's why he play so little but he mean something you know if you *** play really super hard either _Inside Musicast (分秒) It's almost *** he already knew the requirement some of what in really need the song, either right? _David Paich (分秒) see Jeff knew about tuning drums too he do how to tune drums and how to get right sounds *** very sensitive cause he learnd that from his dad cause his dad play timpany and *** and that kind stuff is *** drummer just *** drums (Right) but Jeff play some like there sympathic skins you know Keltner gave Jeff of set it details Ringo given him that had used on like be the [Let It Be] album he is real sensitive inside tones and players in stuff that but tree drums just like there are you know like there vibe stuff you know i mean _Inside Musicast (分秒) hey David a little while ago you mention that you mention something about Jeff never practice you know back in from school and a good friend of mine that used do a session work *** had chance to work with Joe Pocaro and several occations (Yeah) And this is you know back around time of the [TOTO IV] release and there was Boz about that album he and Joe were talk one day about sucsess the album And Jeff *** particular and papa Joe mention that one, one point doing Jeff early teen years i gusss Jeff worked in the house told dad that decided he get part time job And he ... _David Paich (分秒) he took would doing why I'd wonder _Inside Musicast (分秒) I don't know but it set of something you know that pay like minimam wage something you know you basically wanna just a like little extra money and is dad A parent let wasn't crazy about the idea and made deal with Jeff that he were actually hey I'm more than minimum wage from pracitcing is drum and Jeff... _David Paich (分秒) Practice He is practice what of sox maybe he is i wanna kill him when I see it _Inside Musicast (分秒) I mean _David Paich (分秒) Jeff was, he *** Porcaro *** boys *** you know *** stuff like that but now pay me paid practice that *** man ok? that perfect cause back in Jeff he *** like I said you never sign practice with he had *** trying he get groove *** he play forever but you never saw *** like he said never had drum set home It is dad's house but Jeff was always playin' sessions stuff so i'm sure hear me he didn't just get that technic for not practicing you know will you never some play you know what i mean he was like he just was an big drummer fun he really wanna be a artist like I read interview was last ngiht he said the only reason did drums was just get checks and a car you know So *** hey you have to have a car took moves drums And he get checks *** you drummer And I believe man cause Jeff *** Scotty after the first set she was Jeff was gone man _Scott Page (分秒) always _David Paich (分秒) *** he was curiously _David Paich (分秒) Absolutely, Jeff would been *** art of *** out everybody *** God bless I'm you which trying to use *** we be use *** but Ben was so old fashioned that we have stereo type versions of how hard it's gonna be sold if like you *** some young people like Scotty they just be cook on the things cause *** but i been way like were couldn't possibly that easy so anytime something does something we got way for choose sake somebody's like She is *** cool does really do that i'm finding the out i'm wright bloging more than most people now and i'm this for most *** ok? and cause Scotty gave me a lesson as i'm afraid go *** give me a lesson on this you know everybody *** round Jeff understand custom set up Scotty *** no one every done here and Jeff was understand and be all I know he be all over man (Yeah) Jeff you know *** Joseph Williams be all over with cameras joseph williams take cameras on stage he was the first guys start film the audience we play and sing *** Jeff playing drums he is probably as hole bunch of footage joseph does _Scott Page (分秒) yeah _David Paich (分秒) of Jeff playing cause Joseph would just take the camera start film everybody like *** does you know _Scott Page (分秒) Yeah, I saw that actually one of them the video somebody post there was, there was Joseph with camera _David Paich (分秒) Yeah, we had hole bunch of video stuff, Scotty you know *** we organize i'm tell you *** beginin' you know _Scott Page (分秒) Yeah, more just *** things *** rolling stone it's good at start really get fun here pretty soon cause we get *** some new update, upgrade softeware A bunch of new thing *** _David Paich (分秒) Jeff was the great embasador I like said *** and he turn and he *** to all the other musicians Jeff was the great embasador *** to the music world you know what i mean he was like magnet for musicians _Scott Page (分秒) *** I, i given him goes for things you know I mean I project that I did through the years and you know Jeff was always *** i always call he was always great *** even know *** a lot of things *** had do but the beautiful *** i always knew once if Jeff said he would do the gig everybody together on board _David Paich (分秒) yeah that's right _Scott Page (分秒) *** that he had **** incredible i've been remember have a conversation with David Gilmour Jeff is like his favorite drummer _David Paich (分秒) Yeah *** _Scott Page (分秒) i'm mean Gilmour which was was the was such a Jeff fun i can say every conversations we have on the road talkin' about Jeff _David Paich (分秒) that's great _Scott Page (分秒) yes i mean all the time cause i know you know he did wanna Jeff, wanna Dave recorod _David Paich (分秒) yeah right _Scott Page (分秒) maybe *** then I actually when Jeff passed my first call when I heard I was actually in New York my first call was Daive when i talked him right the time when we heard and like he was pretty he was difinitely bump down man I mean everybody the hole industry was bump down *** _David Paich (分秒) yeah man that's why was *** long time you know _Scott Page (分秒) ooh body there is no qustion I mean i still go up *** opptunity *** groove (Yeah) and but was you know that was quite shock for all of this there's no question But it feel interestong how legathys continue *** on _David Paich (分秒) i want access that you know *** he just, he just laughed *** he just left down here I all want is one play with Hendrix because *** man I think just, i think just like oh dear something like that in in go play with Hendrix he is to make jokes like **** thirteen *** _Scott Page (分秒) *** session *** i remember we on the road when we had two buses Dave we had A-bus and B-bus In the B-bus was myself, Jeff, Lenny and paullete and final tour we listen to basically three, three tapes so that time i think *** _David Paich (分秒) Actually [Bold As Love] *** _Scott Page (分秒) And it was what was Hendrix it was Steely Dan and was Marvin Gay's greatest hits that's it we listen that thinks the entire tour He knew every licks everything about those records he study those things *** level I don't think anybody study anywhere _Inside Musicast (分秒) you know here is the question I just thougut of sitting here I never thougt of this before but Simmon has been drummer of TOTO almost on Jeff was (Yeah) isn't it amazing that think about _David Paich (分秒) that's amazing then Mike Porcaro *** Hungate *** stuff you know _Inside Musicast (分秒) but then interesting thing are thing I just thought about was did Jeff and Simmon know each other? _David Paich (分秒) they met briefly couple of times _Inside Musicast (分秒) did they _David Paich (分秒) Yeah *** but they knew each other and they knew of each other cause they travel same circle you know what I mean. but i cause Simmon *** that's weired the Simmon been like a you know TOTO members but that's another conversation here you know i come from the original TOTO you know what i mean this guys old you know there is new TOTO you know I _Inside Musicast (分秒) is there anything that that you *** say about Jeff talk about that we didn't really cover any, any interesting story? _David Paich (分秒) There so much you know we like to do hole onother special *** some time. _Inside Musicast (分秒) we could yeah, we could do that _David Paich (分秒) We even didn't *** stuff you know His technic stuff just he was the he had the biggist heart i think he love kids I think *** most I had ever been around like kids but he helped people he help so many drummers can start help Vinnie Colaiuat he helps Greg Bisonnette he helped me he helped everybody cause *** hole bunch of people and he love music and he was good father And, and he was my bro my partner TOTO, him and me we start the band we, we put up co-sign *** for houses put on hole thing behind this band here we started and so was me and him for the begining there and he is the best *** he is the best drummer I have ever played with that I'm play with everybody except you know Charlie Watts and then Gene Cooper you know what i mean basically you know he is my favorite drummer _Inside Musicast (分秒) Well that we really appriciate taken time to talk us to about Jeff Porcaro Musicast (分秒) that be really cool we really cool _David Paich (分秒) you know what i mean I remember hole bunch of stuff I just *** refresh my memory cause when you put Scotty the phone Scotty and i have hole other *** we know about Jeff casuse we were in the band at highschool with them (Right) so there's hole other history *** even stark with these in TOTO you know what I mean This cause way back _Inside Musicast (分秒) hey before we go i've got just couple of *** qustion *** time sensitive I like to *** actually these came from couple of a TOTO network members Actually they came from steve mccvay and mark *** from the TOTO 99 web-site And they want to know about TOTO's 30th aniverary And that tour that I guess in planig stages _David Paich (分秒) i have no idea about that my band my band keep things *** from me and by the way i'm, i'm there bunch of muteness *** drift here I, you know I think quite the band I think *** you know what I mean and so i'm really try find them and when I catch up them that be a price to pays *** but i'm sure the fun club in the guys *** have something can memorite if i any reasons it like entertainment people any reason have world show this is 30th aniversary you know (Yeah) our first final tour you know what i mean (Right) _Inside Musicast (分秒) Are there any plans maybe you don't know the answer this maybe the keepin' this from you too but other any plans for some sort an albums release to co-inside with that 30th aniverary _David Paich (分秒) ah that's really too hard to tell i know i don't have *** guys _Inside Musicast (分秒) Well Eddy is good ideas for you _David Paich (分秒) Yeah what it is _Inside Musicast (分秒) you guys the traditional none for *** for re-arranging you know even your classic tunes i mean i was just talking to greg Greg Philliganes and he did this you know phenominal did do new arrangement for rosanna you know _David Paich (分秒) oh yeah man *** with check *** _Inside Musicast (分秒) that's*** it's a _David Paich (分秒) i was deep _Inside Musicast (分秒) it's a very heavy groove there and i'm thinking *** you guys have legathy sort of changing these some time even given a hole *** completlly markable to a different type to create you know *** different music and boys you guys have a not gonna doing maybe you can do with the some of the awesome _David Paich (分秒) That's interesting like clapton what he did _Inside Musicast (分秒) "Layla" _David Paich (分秒) Layla stuff like that you know first I was against *** idea cause i *** cause we really don't really like re-do old hits stuff and when do we live we might have point *** maybe if something like totaly a new reords like was Philliganes the band that **** that maybe i have to think about of that it maybe put out *** package and put some extra cut
