David Paich - [ Destined for Success, Part 1 ]

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
David welcome to Inside Musicast

_David Paich (•ª•b)
hey man it's great to be here

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
yeah it's good to have you
hey David let's start thing with off by talking about your latest CD [Falling In Between]
it was released earylier this year
and I this one of find out how things goin'
I mean how are sales going so far and
and how's been successful as you are hoped

_David Paich (•ª•b)
It's been very well recieve benefit album we are just
you know we really put our swet brad swet tears *** this one here and
and I think it's sold over the two hundred thousand mark
I mean for for toto I mean this is like, this is the first things with our record campany here
that just year it that's just outside united states
it's just *** us distributed all things that ***
I had even check this sales *** because guys just been right *** through the country here you know but
we been knock on one we doing OK and hopely it's gainig even more *** minumu here you know

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
well, two hundred thousand outside of the states but how's doing here home?

_David Paich (•ª•b)
Ah, you know it's gainig of minumam here is what I just fund out for read I are just distributs here
we've passed where are last sale was when we were with record company which was Columbia record company O.K. ?
so as a independant here we past sales was that
I think we probably done I don't know
it's hard just to say now maybe ten or twenty thousand records here
but it's hard united states because we were the that
the tours and the promo has just started i mean in the last 4, 5 month of years so
it's bacially still do here you know
and toto will be touring probably for the next year
all of the world and states cause we kind of rebuilt in united states here so
we also digitally download it at our web site so
it's very hard tell how you doing in united states because
a pepole buy from web also

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
that's true yeah
*** typical how are does with lanches of the new, new project
there be pretty much launches *** be right grobally really

_David Paich (•ª•b)
yeah they are
that's we did we make sure the we had all rights here for the united states and our digital rights here for and
toto cause were totaly so funded by the guys in the band it's really lebel ***
we don't have any these huge promotinal budget so they do not *** big franchise ax
so we were just musicians hand mouse you know what I mean well
the guys who makes some money we go Ok because been some our money promote ourself here you know
but it is our product in no one tells us what's to do what we make it
*** here we don't have we are producer we write everything produce everything
and we recorded everything actually simon phillips record most *** engineer
and we were just workin' out like at old funky studio then i where we begin valley
cause toto was originaly just a valley band playin'
at grant highschool
*** valley college so we were kind of done three to16 here you know

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
you know i was really pleased to see as fan is some of the tv time you got on we just *** oh yeah)
and what was extra I believe

_David Paich (•ª•b)
oh yeah we got on this i'm a friend of mine live down street name john williamson
who handles like he handle, hole note video also handle like that all *** stuff like that
and we were just talkin' it and he just said we don't get me, let me handle toto for six month here you know
and we have had any tv explortion little early in the positive tv explortion
and *** for long time and
he is the guy he pick up the phone and *** reaches he got extra and got cnn and all the stuff you know

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
is it amazing some times all takes phone call

_David Paich (•ª•b)
all takes you know what I mean little push you know what I mean

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
so dave you actually finally got let's this call the record lebel monkey *** you guys back in (yeah)
this is i mean you sayin' creatively that was pretty relelatin' but

_David Paich (•ª•b)
well not so much *** creatively but just
when you first co-sign to label there very excite about just put a lot body into
and there *** you under way and dying you
after you sold 20 million records for them
and then number their change they you don't you not fravor of them month and
and columbia has a wave changing excuse me sony
as a wave changing president united states it's like a
band members change there sox under wear on the road you know what i mean
I mean like you if you go to A&M there was Herb Albert about for year
a Warner brothers *** there forty years ok
I mean every two years are there was name president it's a sony you know start with
blues *** who's a great president and with a tenor saxphone player
he sign toto and hired me they did do got to be real for Cheryl Lynn *** the same time (That's right)
so we were doing that and he is still work i mean he did norah Johnes album was a *** god bless *** who just past
he will be one of our brothers forever he produced the lady love me there *** james *** jeff was on it and luke and me so that's another toto thing there
and then they just start changing president change president so I mean when we had in 1988
when we had pamela" out there
i mean we were like No. 15 with a bullet
this is was goin' on all the way we had two *** three radio station
this so we were we were week away from *** top ten
and they *** go
because president at that time
and lock the door since springsteen's records fed up *** chart *** chart ***
and we, we've really lost *** for the big power struction ***

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
so what's you really sayin' is one reader ship but that add *** such a major label type of company
one that change is there *** it changes us to the, the saver and the what they atractiing really what they promote right

_David Paich (•ª•b)
that's you bet you know ***
that's was *** to us because that was like our come back records just toto iv album
i mean we here we finally *** this was go on no.1 right)
we had it
right there like I said for them to *** system when you change the higher ***
it just not affect the artist on there that record should kept going into the top
I like I said they closed their doors
shut lock black lock new ***
and like I said bluce springsteen the album feld up chart bullet disappear *** too
i mean in the other business except music business
those *** countable for that you know
in the music business you can go to two other record companys
and find the people that they let go what those company
so in the record business you don't get let it go and then you are black list and
you just can circulated it
with in the community to another record company you know

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
you mention this second ago got to be real" as Cheryl Lynn song
that song is still everywhere yeah)
as such it's has such great staying power
i mean you hear a lot of, lot sound tracks i mean lot, a lot promotions

_David Paich (•ª•b)
they used for [shark tale]
mr.will smith, mary j
and they useded for like *** commercials and all kind of things been we really fun that was fun records I make with
ray parker with on that
and james gadson David sheilds and
that was kind of emotions this rhythm sections

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
what, what made that so makable dave

_David Paich (•ª•b)
i got I think that was combination of just kind of simple groove dance thing
it was the timeing and players we had on it
and i got knock on with David foster came in
and he wrote that with me share why write on the spot we were sunset one
and i had riff down and
foster came in and saying those "what's you think it and Cheryl did the answer I mean we like we wrote it on spot
like that
so it was truely one of those captural *** magical ***
it's s been good to foster and me and Cheryl you know we very blast

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
hey i wanna ask you about simmon phillips in his role of engineering and tracking this last album
did you feel that you know keeping the aspect of the creative process in *** family
did you feel what give me more creative freedom then if you working like with Elliot Schneiner or somebody else outside the, out of the family?

_David Paich (•ª•b)
you know that's a really good question *** here take me second to ansewer because
you pick to really good engineers here Elliot Schneiner
is such phenominal component in recording
and he has great musical idea to bounce off *** and he is
engineering so ***
that is just absolutely *** magical
cause job *** good engineer is to make so *** musicans
we don't have the think about how's be recording we just have to do *** artistic part (right)
or say it *** put some special effects on put some the magic dust here you know (and just doin')
*** somethin' (yeah)
so in those cases
i don't feel that there was any press *** mind ***
maybe simmon because simmon has a real *** engineering
and he loves organize things you know he is like a, he is like *** about a spring cleaning and keeping all the records and books and
and he really need be kind of a forensics
specialist to do pro tools (yeah
because they are so much logging and archiveing
so but i think simmon be a player with able to really help with his drum sounds because simmon knows
how to mike is drums and how he suppose to sounds (yeah right)
but it is always hardest to get drum sound i think (right, oh that's true)
and simmon with able to achieve those very quickly and that's same as lot of time spine in the studio

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
yeah, i can that that
you know the perccusion the miking on the drums ***
it was *** this project

_David Paich (•ª•b)
yeah and simmon's drums I mean that's no easier
get mike i recall the HMS phillips you know
like *** you know what i mean
he is got so many drums *** so big everything you now

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
he is an amazing talent

_David Paich (•ª•b)
he is totaly amaing talent he makes sound through the right size for him you know

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
eddy and i were up to *** ontario about year and half go to see
the guys play up there and
and after the show i you we got together with band when we were everybody with chat about the perfomance you know and everything toto but
i cornered simmon and just ask one question about engineering and we were often to a one hour *** engineering

_David Paich (•ª•b)
that's right yes simmon was time *** he tell how to built watch
you know what i mean

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
not always great
cause i'm pro tools engineer too

_David Paich (•ª•b)
you know what i mean
you guys must had ***

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
oh was great
I mean he and i were just often corner for an hour (Oh , yeah)
you know forget about what if
you know everyhing else ***

_David Paich (•ª•b)
excactly *** hole other
you guys like you know
that's that's that's *** pro tools engineering you know what I mean

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
that's right

_David Paich (•ª•b)
you only guy your miss *** Steve MacMillan you know

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
oh yeah on he's fabulous too
he engineering

_David Paich (•ª•b)
yeah he is like groove god father here you know he even shows simmon stuff *** simmon doesn't know you know

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
was this the first time you guy
this, this is the first time you work with him right

_David Paich (•ª•b)
no it is not
we work with him on the [Through the looking glass] record ok)
and he done over dubs for us before vocals and stuff like that
he work with james newton howard and he worked with under Elliot Scheiner
and travor horn
so he was, i work with him on a movie and
he is just absolutely ridiculous
and he is such a nich easy going guy
but he is always courage always *** stuff and
and i just dig him
and he as good feel for toto *** in there
cause we beat engineer *** hole lie you know what I mean
no we hate that yes we love it no we hate it no we hate it and we love it you know

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
we pays off because you know last couple few albums
it's been nominate for grammys for best engineering

_David Paich (•ª•b)
yeah, i think specially the last album this *** album absolutely is
probably next to toto iv] my favorite toto album

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
yeah i was gonna mention that too
I it's you know just from fan *** point
i think it's so *** front back

_David Paich (•ª•b)
yeah, we really we really *** the box here
and actuatlly we through the box way here *** I would back ***
toto *** here which is to go listen guys I'm gonna call pane *** chicago
you know we call ***
you know we call joseph williams in
and we just did stuff like that add in
and you know brought philliganes into the band which is absolutely made it
so special to open that door which I always had problem with
get into the real R&B door
and just having great another keyboard players toto always been two keyboard band
that's the hole key to it's like Procol Harum (Yeah)
you know and and so
having philligane who are *** greatest
combination utilitiy keyboards, vocals, entertaiment down the face to playin' I mean
he just right up there call me (absolutely)
he is like a franchise player like *** michel jordan
no question about it
and so his contribution was like I made my job really easy
i was able to set back in produce more
because i was able to say Greg here is a kind of thing I hearing he would go
oh i know he want to he sit down play better than me
so i been the booth for simmon which is fun
that i like doin that you know i am no ego problem goin'
whatever play *** best get out there play it
and I'll just sit in here and just groovin'
and tell you when the *** guys it's just like we groovin'
Get out there's who we groovin' *** it's just ***
they come back you know mick jagger's album
*** what you saying ***
get out there you know

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
well you know there, there seems to be such a unselfish coraboration I you know that (no question)
that greg is on *** in so force but
is just more than *** keyboard *** there is, there such a chemestry there is this
he is always been there and and
dave tell us little bit about ***
how did you pave that a role to greg in, greg get a role pave to you guys
how did that happen

_David Paich (•ª•b)
i'll tell you exactly *** happen
first of all we play with greg
i met greg 25 years ago (sure) *** I got session with them
and the bands plays with them of hole lunch *** you know
and the band always *** or you can David even think about it things like greg philegames cause he, always you can never get him
you know so everytime i go to a party or montorux *** jazz festival
he been the lounge play my songs and singing
i've look who lounge he play "Miss Sun"
and he play "George porgy"
and he play hold the line"

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
*** did you sight walk in this sort of goin on

_David Paich (•ª•b)
yeah he just *** playing
no hold the hole sing play perfectly in singing
so he keeps doing this doing this
and i say man you know this is stupid
you know with every think about it going on out there band
and these seems like he said two seconds
so i thought my band that they like yeah right you don't
he would go out with you if he does he want like a *** million dollars a week
and i told no kinds
this guy wants to be part of toto needs the band member
so they took them out i was
i was tryin to phase off the road here cause i was you know
tryin to stay marry is here which i've *** been for 21 years *** daughter
so i just try it out and they loved him
and and this album here is contribution with just
it's just so *** that the *** band immidiately meet him for member you know

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
it's almost

_David Paich (•ª•b)
that easy

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
a divine connectivety here because is this what's you needed at right time

_David Paich (•ª•b)
it was what we need we need
he is a billy preson *** beatles
he really is you know what I mean
and i say that always respect billy preston is absolutely *** metall *** you know
and he passed to and he is one of the spiritual brothers that ***
but top me greg a lot you know I mean

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
well you know that vibe comes out your album
when you use word you know that's spiritual
and i'm just refferey this spiritual man but
you know there there is something happening with the vive *** out of the album that's saids
hey there there something more *** musically guys there, there someting more you know
and that was
that was *** accidents was

_David Paich (•ª•b)
no questiton i think it's *** able to pick up on the ***
i think it's the first album we toto actually has ***
and talked about
cause why do we trying to say here you know group here you know
before we just like this go right this song right this song
and i just bunch solo of recording *** put together less we were writing africa with jeff back in the old days old instrumetal
and now we start thinking and trying voice one have *** singing voice former band so
there was a lot of coraboration lyricly and musically on this
we on there everyday i took the *** writing lyric I just got in to *** dedicated *** for the album ***
on spritual man i was write *** stuff there was just comes out with me and
and all became *** so much fun
this guy could write enough bobby is writing
and luke is wright stuff and mikie add stuff too
everybody just like sit round like good group fleetwood mac and beatles
and now oldies great legendaly groups like we heard they used to do you know I mean

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
well that's start how music *** ithese days ***
i mean the collaboration *** we were talking to lee sklar one of previous intervews he was saying
you know the good old days of making music it just used to be

_David Paich (•ª•b)
that's yes or no because *** making music is move to nashville
so they kind of do it to way *** we did out here
but i here there was the time when when really that's with our recording sessions with just like going into club those were the perfomaces
and people were jamming you know what i mean
all the best performances like we recording studios
was leo sayer joe cooker, aretha franklin i'm mean everybody wih, it was like live music but *** for the frst time so
i think that *** atractive people going out playing live
it's the live expeprience
with people are respond into immidiately
cause they can't do that too much right because everything put on one of the time
maybe even Mariah Carey *** doesn't vocal
i'm sure she is *** there *** pro tools (excatly)
*** should
but, but certainly there is not a lot *** with toto's so we miss the crowd *** people of studio making stuff cause it was like
you know immieadty this happening either or not it was be full musicians (yeah)
yeah it all the time for jim keltner tom scott
i mean everybody with come in just give what do you think our new our stuff here so we were bounce *** off it
and today i think they make stuff
because it's *** done with pro tools
you know you put drum sound and you put this one
it's really hard to get full reaction
you know I mean to to the live they but
kid they manage to get round i'm sure so relative I'm sure they
replica hold bunch of people in the studio dance to it *** same things we end it you know what I mean so

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
well [Fallin' ...

_David Paich (•ª•b)
Le Sklar is just old better bass player
*** long and he's gotta *** gun
he *** shoot I saw shoot of a couple of coffee out of producer's hand like close friends of the pal gun on a session cause even more like producer

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
not does surise me
i don't even know I'm the well but *** some how the doesn't surise me

_David Paich (•ª•b)
it was unbelieve
i love you, lee

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
well difinitely falling in between it's not only a wonderful album but it
is me and Rcik thought of coda as zero skip back to
because every song you wanna hear it you know

_David Paich (•ª•b)
yeah, that's we set up to do just records *** apprciate it and
or we *** Roy Hargrove *** trampet player name ***

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
we've talkin' about toto you know
being out on the road and he *** talking by greg in joing the band
you know the the band just got back from a big tour over the seas and
and from pesonal reason *** you *** not to go out on this tour
and tell me how you felt about not touring with the guys this time now

_David Paich (•ª•b)
well you know can people would ask me first of all the reason I'm staying here is my sister has is that UCLA right now
she is waiting as we speak the doctor is to call in tell she waiting long *** that's right)
right now she is be waiting for like a couple years so she *** the next personal *** very exciting
that's why
and also just like i said my dad's leaving for collage in a month here and
some time she got stay back ***
anyway you know people *** got *** you know like I said play with toto
and i play music for so long
like 35 years you know every day live in breezed you know
i mean when i'm not on the road I'm still *** they *** clock and night I'm warm up doin warm up in my head I do that show in my head you what know what I mean
i'm with them where ever they are anytime and day you know
it's just easier here cause i don't *** fax get up there play *** show
this really hard show to play
*** shit remeber
you can't sleep during this show or blink you know
i wish i was in this stones or blues Springsteen man that's the cream fun gig
*** like playing with Yes
and and like Mahavishnu Orchestra you know what I mean
it's this like it's like a bullet train chase you all the time with simmon you know

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
i understand but even know you your home now and you with your family *** took *** just *** home sickness from being out on the road

_David Paich (•ª•b)
you bet absolutely no question about I'm mean I just play with the boz scaggs just will turn and I play with them in two mexico *** I've been doing a couple little sit in gigs here *** thing *** fudge
reform the another day for klos with *** fox
and just gettin' up on stage and having people of proud and been play music on stage i mean
there was like a hudred twenty five people
and i felt like those the twelve thousand people there
so I really do it's funny
you don't think you gonna miss to you get away from at for a while here I go
man you know i really remeber now how great what a great gig *** so
when you hear people complain about out there
it's not that bad gig you know I mean (sure)
it's fun so yeah i do miss and I really miss see the our royal fans
all their faces
and see the new people too cause those people become our concert *** for years you know
and it's really like a said we will be tour without funs
but answer your question i miss that like *** on stage we have a blast on stage you know
that was my job that make everybody laughin' to
and we were just cut up all the time you know
it's lot of fun

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
well i know, i know that you truely miss by the fans
because on the toto network they talk about you a lot *** and

_David Paich (•ª•b)
let me be feel good cause I know *** too much
anytime I see something to get *** has my name that I use *** skip over i go down wanna *** about me (hey,
i mean *** it's gotta bad

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
the band is back from over seas and
and if got few dates come up here and west coast and I want to know if you are had playing on on playing *** since there *** to home

_David Paich (•ª•b)
actually funny story you know about people are askin' me
why do you playin' with boz scaggs *** in not with toto *** it's very easy
boz scaggs ask me to play with them my band ask me not play ok
because dave, we had have meeting here
this is hard show and we you know we don't think that you know you have *** mind I said guys
you mean like i i want to hold the line if i *** for the records you guys serious
you know ok i get it you know i mean yeah I forgot old songs so
so i might *** surprise *** (make
*** should *** and going got to be real or something you know what I mean

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
make sure it's in vegas cause I'll be in touch

_David Paich (•ª•b)
all you been vegas
*** vegas you know
you know my wife knows David *** I have him *** make those guys disappear you know

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
they gone i'm beared
hey listen you you brought boz scaggs and
you have such a ritch history you know woking with him back from off course the [Silk Degrees] days and so force
and we can we can talk about that little later but (ok)
you know i want to talk about your last project with him in
and there was one of the most phenominal I, I listen to all the time it's dig

_David Paich (•ª•b)
Hey thank you so much you know
i was wondering if anybody listen to *** that album
because you know was released during that *** week
and but it is one of my favorite albums I work done
i still put that on
and there was such a great experience working with danny koortch first of all *** hole lot from
we like *** one of the great producers and
powerful *** and I'm *** so glad you like that

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
yeah, dig it's gonna be a classic and
and your aproach that album *** I mean you practically wrote on every cut I've only believe you produce the, the piece for boz
and but your your aproach i mean
it's it's very well engineer but it's sounds if you you just recording that live you follow me

_David Paich (•ª•b)
yeah that' s the key that's tricks
when but you can get there was the hole lot players
that's koorch and me basically OK
it was really fun cause we start makin' demo so the stuff we were you know
boz was kind he is really picky who we gonna use for players and he goes I want to play all the guitars *** this one
so everybody else *** say that i say hey I can came from ***
go fight you know
and I said let me play some keyboard we get this person this person
all we start makin' demos and then koorch they are touch about they say
you know we heard danny koorch's one *** make their record *** like
i'm still auditioning now i find out you know *** the records
and they go danny koorch is the recommand by the recorod campany
cause he just billy joel's vip record ***
*** whatever that record was
whatever that they call
do wop records that what koorch ***
because *** hold the line ***
every just do wap song because we hate you guy ***
koorch said that do wap record was billy Joel ***
*** what think koorch i said man
i insist on
he is absolutely perfect for this but I have to be with him and me together will be perfect
cause he plays guitar and he
he thinks of all
and he can makes anything feel good you know
he makes the best feeling demos for drum machines I ever heard
and let me go on just about this for one one second here
so we were doin' the demos so koorch saids *** demos *** masters
wih just fix that bass part let's fixs here
and we realize we really have like four tracks
we missed demo *** koorch says came in there *** just transfer this stuff
and put the another bass on it we start doin' lead vocals on it so
that's why he brought to get this live thing happening in the more loose and live he and boz for like cheer readers in the studio
he play performance they be screamin' *** jump up and down stuff you know
he play some solo
and we use old vintage instrumental *** when you do pro tools
cause it's all digital domain but we had old oldest funky instrtuments
might mono it's in stuff like that you can posiblely gets of oldies buzes and hums

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
I mean there was one of the tracks say was it miss realize I think you might sort of
i mean there is even like LP *** little thing little the texture it scratch ***
and you through the add in there *** like man

_David Paich (•ª•b)
It's where like all *** you *** everything *** scratching records
and these blue synthesizers
but sounds really weired everything like that ***
and that's what he does
he does one using anything *** hipping new right
it like *** you know

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
what work but one more last question on this project we move on but
specifictly the horns
*** with there was one guy
that you I mean instead of having jerry hey and you know the horn teams so force
who play i can't the name *** case but

_David Paich (•ª•b)
that's Roy Hargrove (Roy Hargrove
That's why I got it from

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
he actually play every single horn part
and if you listen really cross it to the album
i mean you can hear and feel his breath on neck
because he is

_David Paich (•ª•b)
he is phenominal he was on
and man I got *** jenny dagrous turn me on he done what's the guy the solo artist came out
he was hip guy *** keyboard player
he just came out ***
and i forget this name right now because just one word and any any always *** just *** down *** all the time
real hip player
and i got his recorod always listen to and and this guy Roy Hargrove on it
and i could think a man how is he who is he that stuff and what are *** sax ***
and he came in with one trampet those ***

my dad from rest open so it was just like you know
I thought we were like you know
it legal ailiens
there was just brothers and sisters *** house also all time you know
so it was great and
my dad worked with sammy davis JR. all his records
and there was so many musicians you know what I mean
ray brown, *** it lot jazz
it was very much jazz *** tell about 64, 65 when the beatles came in
and music start changin' little bit right that area
which that I got into you know all that stuff
but i heard great rhythm sections play
always live music with like Ella Fitzgerald
my dad did lot for her stuff and we i go down there
I watch the hole band just record hole album did one night with her singing you know
all these all cast ***
I met Duke Ellington when I was six
and stuff my dad with down arrange this stuff
and funny i cause work with the high school jazz bands now
and *** jazz band just only Duke Ellington came in secondly we consider
and i play *** them so I been past *** down *** kid you know
touch Duke Ellington stuff so
it mean hole lot different thing to me now these just
i was just like a kid candy shop sit next to drummers but now look at kids

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)

you atended at grant highshool at Los Angeles

_David Paich (•ª•b)
ok i didn't atend grant
i just play there I ***
I want to *** boys Catholic Collage prep call *** out in the west valley
i was the only guy didn't go grant

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
oh what was the that did you eventually met the pocaros

_David Paich (•ª•b)
that was when I was thirteen
my dad with doing the Glenn Campbell show
and joe porcaro came out and he
my dad was looking for a good tamburine player percussionist gospel tamburine player
and joe came in my dad said you are hired
and then he just one this battle the bands i think it was like 69
i met jeff just turn fourteen
and joe says their keyboards player is gone
And you should try for their group you know
so i got in the you know my parents we didn't have drivers licence my we had parents had drive me the
you know jeff's
in the and I set down my audition was the, the no.i record with, with feelin' Alright" by joe cocker
so i this *** piano on there like cause you play with cooker *** you know
and they said perfect you are in the band
that's always got together then next thing I knew I were was over the porcaro's garage with they use to rehearsed
then when i walked in
they always playin' "Soul man" by Same And Dave they paly hole ***
and i'm talk about these guys plays better than records OK
then horns
jeff was playin' and this room was smoked with so hot
they were just kidis highschool kids
it was ridiculus i wanna tryin find some
if there was any tapes around
we were playin' in those days man
it was, it was so much fun

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
you are run with Jeff Porcaro started the band called rural still life back in highschool is that right?

_David Paich (•ª•b)
ooh him and i did see his band was
their band speaked it like you know the valley
the band was called *** souls
(*** soul that's right
ok jeff was in I beat up with the band before i got in
and they have they are blue, purple nail jackets in played only james brown music
ok how valley style ok
so i get the band and i start to bringing *** playing like three dog nights i brought in stones, the rolling stones
i brought in ***
i brought in a hole bunch of the stuff they were do brad swet tears and santana stuff
and then we tom scott had an album solo album called Rural Still Life
so we change the name of the band to Rural Still Life ***
and then they became still life
and jeff was drawing these pamphlets
jeff used to do all the promotinal marketing
he be he draw thing art class print of up put them on all the cars in the parking lot stuff

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
he is a marketing grew right

_David Paich (•ª•b)
yeah he was an artist jeff
I *** things on jeff you know
and people don't believe me
then jeff never had a set in drums in his room when he removed away
you nver saw jeff practicing *** playing drums you never had sticks in his house
like other drummers have you know set drums
but jeff was always drawing he want to be artist

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
that's interesting
going back to rural still life
did you guys just do covers or did you guys do ever doing any original music

_David Paich (•ª•b)
in, in what still life

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
in still life yeah

_David Paich (•ª•b)
it was all covers

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
it was all covers?

_David Paich (•ª•b)
yeah, we do the original stuff i think we maybe try the couple of things
but we, with so eary in our writing stages
and we were mainly a band for hired for doing dances so we wouldn't
you know we do different versions we do like jumpin jack flash
and bringing some of mad dogs english man palyers
but we were basically a mad dogs *** english man band
*** / santana / sly and family stone
that was stuff
all the diffrent kind the people on stage horn sections
it was just like a big sly and family stone

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
so who were the members of the original band there on still life with

_David Paich (•ª•b)
with *** who mike replace to not *** after
so mike became the bass player
scotty Page with on trampet
I got name Steve *** on tennor he was like the band manager I think
and those guy name frank *** who still plays at the L.A. Laker's games
guy name dag dug *** toronbone

and then guy name *** cllff gordon who was singer
and we eventuly let him go
and they found this guy who just cut *** prison this black guy name frank haze
25 years old *** we were 15 we ***
and we going down and to east L.A.
*** house of pancakes pick up the guy he just got out the prison *** singer ok
and our parents *** like
what did get you this guy we were like
he is like is like works for the church you know
and so this is our singer then we start sings like gimmy shelter
and and really hard *** stones song for this guys singing
it was like it was like when you heard Tina Turner doing just stones of rock'n'roll stuff that's her *** like so

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
are there any hidden of recordings anywhere about that

_David Paich (•ª•b)
they are i'm good at trace of down
i think steve *** some of i think his brother andy ***
you got hear after there any recording so this you got hear these band
now that was some of band
i don't know steve had any of us plan
but the second generatinon band which was
lukather, steve porcaro and michael Landu those guys
they perform like the hole *** album man
they just lukather and landu sound awesome
because you got hear these guys playing with they were like 15

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
so David hungate never really was in the begining

_David Paich (•ª•b)
oh hungate when jeff left high school we really joined the sonny and cher on the road
which who they were huge *** time
David hungate was the bass player
dean parks was the guitar player
and three month after jeff join' i joined
sonny and cher cause jeff like *** my dad was I played on the records for sonny and cher so
so that was one me and jeff and hungate became a trio
cause mike was still on highschool
why reason mike was in the band originally
because he hadn't graduated highschool yet
ok
all these guys really young mike is like, is senior
and we spilit for the road so
it was like mike you know
when you finish school *** you know

_Inside Musicast (•ª•b)
poor mike

_David Paich (•ª•b)
finally you know mike had out and he was like man i wanna be the band
